Hi @Cognac22,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Try these steps:
1. Check Printer Settings and Preferences
- In the Print dialog: Ensure that the print settings are set to print in color.
- HP Printer Software: Open the HP printer software on your computer.
- Windows 8.1: Click the down arrow in the lower-left corner of the Start screen, and then select the printer name.
- Windows 8: Right-click an empty area on the Start screen, click All Apps on the app bar, and then select the printer name.
- Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP: From your desktop, click Start, select All Programs, click HP, and find the printer folder and its settings.
2. Verify Paper Settings and Ink Levels
- Ensure that the correct paper type and quality settings are selected.
- Check the estimated ink levels by touching the Ink icon on the Home screen of the printer control panel.
3. Test Different Applications
- Try printing from other applications (like Word or PDF) to see if the issue is specific to internet browsers.
4. Print a Diagnostic Page
- From the printer control panel, print a test page to see if the printer can print in color.
5. Update or Reinstall Printer Driver
- Ensure that you have the latest printer driver installed. You can download the latest driver from the HP website.
- Sometimes, reinstalling the printer driver can fix such issues. Uninstall your current driver and reinstall the latest version.
6. Check HP Instant Ink Cartridges
- Ensure that the HP Instant Ink cartridges are properly installed and have enough ink. Sometimes removing and reinstalling the cartridges can help.
- Clean the ink cartridges to ensure no blockage or ink was dried up.
7. Browser Printing Settings
- If the issue is specific to printing from the internet, check the browser’s print settings. Different browsers might have different print settings.
I hope this helps.

Sorry for the delay in getting back, been laid up. I had tried the items outlined previously. However, when I go to download driver it says "HP Print and Scan Doctor is no longer maintained and should be removed due to potential security risks." Also, does not recognize serial number. Any other ideas.

Hi @Cognac22,
Thank you so much for getting back to us, and no worries at all about the delay! I hope you're feeling better now.
You're absolutely right: HP Print and Scan Doctor is no longer maintained, which is why that message pops up. But don’t worry! Most of its features, like troubleshooting and diagnostics, have been integrated into the HP Smart app
You can download the HP Smart app from the Microsoft Store or HP’s official website. Once installed, it will help you:
Check connection and network issues
Perform printer diagnostics
Access updated drivers and features
Scan and print with updated controls
As for the serial number not being recognized, sometimes older models need to be added manually in HP Smart. Make sure the printer is turned on and connected via Wi-Fi or USB, then follow the prompts to “Add Printer.”
I hope this helps.
