Hi @Squishypie,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thanks for the detailed description. Since your HP laptop's audio was working recently and now the "Sound, video and game controllers" section is missing from Device Manager, this typically points to a driver issue or a hardware detection problem. Here's a step-by-step guide to help solve the issue.
Step-by-Step Fix for Missing Audio Device on HP Laptop
1. Scan for Hardware Changes
- Open Device Manager.
- Click on the "Action" menu at the top.
- Select "Scan for hardware changes".
- This may force Windows to detect the missing audio hardware.
2. Check BIOS Settings
- Restart your laptop and press F10 (or Esc/F2, depending on your model) to enter BIOS.
- Look for Integrated Peripherals or the Advanced tab.
- Ensure the Audio Device is enabled.
- Save and exit BIOS.
3. Install Audio Driver Manually
- Go to the HP Software and Driver Downloads page.
- Enter your laptop model number.
- Download the latest Realtek HD Audio or Conexant driver listed under Audio.
- Install it and restart your laptop.
4. Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics
- Download and run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics for Windows.
- Run the Audio Test to check for hardware issues.
5. Windows Troubleshooter
- Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar.
- Select Troubleshoot sound problems.
- Follow the prompts to detect and fix issues.
6. System Restore (if the issue started recently)
- Search for System Restore in the Start menu.
- Choose a restore point from before the issue began.
- Follow the prompts to restore your system.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
